Rai Bharat

b.1991, Solukhumbu, Nepal

Bharat Rai is interested in the potential of everyday things to hold metaphors of his inner life. He came to Kathmandu after finishing his schooling in Solukhumbu but struggled to adjust to the city’s commercial and fast-paced lifestyle. Eventually, art became a means for him to express his inner conflicts and dilemmas. By situating ordinary objects differently, he tries to create new relations with them. He graduated in B.F.A. from Kathmandu University Department of Arts and is currently studying M.F.A. at the Central Department of Fine Arts, Tribhuwan University. He has experience as an art teacher, illustrator and art director.

“I travel in public buses and micro-buses almost everyday. The crowded and claustrophobic world of public vehicles is a staple for most people in Kathmandu. In fact, one learns to ignore it.

But here, I am interested in the everyday experience of this awkward intimacy. I want the viewer to situate themselves as a traveller in these vehicles- not as a commuter hurrying to their stop, but as a watcher, paying attention to the comic-tragic situation. I hope that the depiction of this space might recall other similar spaces and experiences; internal and external.”
